Constitutional/Civil Rights Groups

Organizations that work to protect the rights of people guaranteed by the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and which promote the passage and enforcement of laws and other social measures that extend individual rights or more effectively protect them. In Canada, these rights include the defined fundamental freedoms of conscience and religion; freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression, including freedom of the press and other media of communication; freedom of peaceful assembly; and freedom of association together with specific rights relating to democracy, mobility, equality, official languages, minority language education and legal rights.

 

Services

Office of the Canadian Human Rights Commission Office, located in Ottawa.

Established by the province of Ontario to administer the Ontario Human Rights Code. Works to promote, protect and advance human rights through outreach, cooperation and partnership.

Administers the Canadian Human Rights Act which prohibits discrimination on the grounds of race, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, age, sex, sexual orientation, genetic characteristics, family status, gender identity and expression, marital status, disability, and pardoned conviction.
