Friendly Visiting

Programs that use "friendly visitors" (usually volunteers but also paid hourly companions) to call on people who are hospitalized or in another institutional setting, who are homebound or socially isolated due to disability or old age, or otherwise lack companionship with the objective of brightening their day and helping them to maintain contact with the outside world by reading, talking, listening, writing letters or performing other similar tasks.

Trained volunteers provide companionship and personal assistance to isolated seniors or adults with chronic illnesses or physical or cognitive disabilities. Visits are one to two hours long and occur on a regular weekly or biweekly basis. The compatibility of clients and volunteers is determined

Companions can assist with:

Provides companionship and support to help seniors or persons with disabilities remain independent in their homes. This programs aims to enrich the social interaction of individuals by connecting them to the community and other helpful resources.

Friendly visits and/or telephone reassurance for persons who are living in their own home/apartment or recovering from hospital stays. Time is spent listening, playing games, making crafts, going on outings, telling stories, and enjoying one another’s company.

Provides community support services to urban Indigenous clients, regardless of age, who are disabled, chronically ill, frail, or elderly.
