Programs that contract with employers to offer confidential help to employees, and in some cases their families, whose legal, financial, marital, parent-child, child care, alcoholism, drug abuse, health and/or mental health problems could have a direct impact on their attendance and job performance. EAPs vary in complexity from telephone hotlines that offer referrals for needed services to organizations that offer in-person diagnosis and referral, direct counselling and/or extensive treatment for one or a variety of problems.

Psychiatric hospitals, inpatient psychiatric units and other inpatient psychiatric facilities that specialize in assisting people whose behaviour problems require that they be confined.

Mental health programs that provide education, training and support for people with severe mental illnesses such as depression, bi-polar disorder and schizophrenia that helps them manage their disorder, prevent relapses and re-hospitalizations and achieve personal recovery goals. Participants adopt a self-management care plan; actively share in decision-making with mental health professionals; monitor and manage signs and symptoms or their own condition; manage the impact of the condition on their physical, emotional, occupational and social functioning; and have access to and confidence in their ability to use support services.

A condition in which individuals have a diagnosed mental illness that interferes with their functioning in a substantial way in combination with a chemical dependency problem which aggravates their ability to become stabilized or recover.

Programs that coordinate access to outpatient mental health services and/or psychiatric hospitalization and residential treatment facilities in a community by evaluating the nature and severity of an individual's mental health problem, determining which service response would best meet the needs of the patient, doing an eligibility assessment, and providing a referral to (or facilitating placement in) an appropriate program or facility. Mental health triage services may be located in an emergency department, community mental health service, call centre or co-located with other specialized mental health services.

Programs that provide information about specific health and health-related topics including diseases and conditions, birth control, alcohol and drug abuse, mental health, safety and other similar topics that interested individuals can access on a website or in person, or by telephone, email, chat, text or other communication channel. Information may be in a self-serve, browsable format (for example a web resource directory or library of audio recordings) or provided by live agents with expertise in the field. Also included are 811 or similar services that, in addition to answering medical questions, help callers determine if they are experiencing a medical emergency and need immediate treatment.

Programs that provide a therapeutic living environment in a community-based facility for emotionally disturbed, severely learning disabled, delinquent, pre-delinquent and/or abused children and youth who, because of the severity of their problems, are unable to adjust to other placements but do not require inpatient psychiatric hospitalization. Services include crisis stabilization, initial and continuing bio-psychosocial assessment, care management, medication management, therapy and mobilization of family support and community resources in the context of a comprehensive multidisciplinary treatment plan. Residents often attend on-grounds schools or public special education classes and receive services that are geared to their individual needs and the goal of returning to their own or their foster families.
