General Carpenter Pre-Apprenticeship for Youth Program

Provides employment support, prepares young adults for the General Carpentry trade and connects them with industry employers for work placements.  This program runs for approximately 30 weeks.  Training includes:

  • Pre-employment and job maintenance workshops
  • General Carpenter Level 1 Apprenticeship Training
  • Secondary trade exposure in Drywall, Acoustics and Lathing Application

Participants are provided with personal protective equipment and a basic tool kit.  Upon completion of the 18-week in-class training, participants complete a 12-week paid work placement.  This program is offered in partnership with Mohawk College and the Carpenter’s Union Local 18.

Eligibility

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • minimum Grade 10 education
  • unemployed or underemployed (working less than 20 hours per week)
  • able to commit to full-time hours for the duration of program
  • willing to commute to paid work placement within Hamilton/Halton region

There is no cost to participate in the program. Participants will be responsible for personal transportation to and from training and employment sites, as well as living expenses such as food and rent.
