General Health Education Programs

Programs that provide information that helps the public make choices which promote personal health, prevent illness and disability, take advantage of opportunities for early detection, and support their ability to deal effectively with health problems when they arise. General health education programs provide information about a wide variety of health related topics rather than specializing in a particular area.

 

Services

A Health Settlement Counsellor offers sessions to support landed immigrants and refugees encountering lifestyle modification, acculturation, and adaptation challenges, as well as those seeking to enhance their understanding of health and well-being.

A weekly program providing a welcoming space for immigrant and refugee women to build connections, share experiences, and gain practical knowledge. Topics include mental health, parenting, and navigating Canadian systems. Refreshments and snacks are provided.

Online weekly program for teenaged girls, discussing relevant health topics. Offers skills in self-awareness and management of stress and peer pressure.

A telephone line answered by Public Health Nurses to provide information and assistance for expectant parents and families with children up to 6 years of age, on various health topics including:

Program educating older adults on chronic disease and learning self-management skills to maintain good health. Special focus on lifestyle modification, including weight and blood pressure control.

Provides equitable access to knowledge, programs, and services that mitigate and prevent the development of chronic diseases and conditions.

Provides and promotes opportunities to learn and make healthy lifestyle choices with a focus on environmental and policy approaches to increasing activity rates, healthy eating, tobacco use cessation, cancer prevention, and screening.
