SCORE! ACTIVE is a McMaster University-led research program that promotes the health of newcomer children and their families. The program offers community-based studies that aim to reduce the prevalence of chronic disease development among newcomers to Canada, specifically by understanding their health patterns and behaviours, increasing their self-efficacy for physical activity, and removing barriers to access. The SCORE! research program includes the following activities:
- SCORE! Club: twice-weekly, free physical activity programming for children aged 5-11
- Community Recreation Navigation: access support from a Community Recreation Navigator to connect with recreation programs across Hamilton
- Community Advisory Board: to help shape positive change in participants’ neighbourhoods and address barriers to physical activity for newcomers
- Leadership Academy: a 6 month course to develop community-level leadership skills
1280 Main St W, Hamilton, ON L8S 4L8, Canada
Programs are available for any Hamilton-based newcomer families with children between the ages of 5-11. The team defines newcomer as anyone that was born outside of Canada, regardless of the number of years that they have lived in Canada.
