Genetic Discrimination Protection Laws Enactment/Enforcement
Programs that establish and enforce federal or provincial/territorial legislation, particularly the federal Genetic Non-Discrimination Act (GNDA) along with amendments to the Canadian Labour Code and the Canadian Human Rights Act, which prohibits discrimination based on genetic testing revealing that a person is predisposed to a medical condition that may manifest later in life. The legislation prohibits employers and companies, including insurance providers, from requiring results of genetic testing when providing services or goods, entering contractual agreements, or offering specific terms or conditions in a contract. In addition, the Act forbids denying people services when they refuse to undergo genetic tests and prohibits the collection, use and disclosure of an individual's genetic test results without their written consent.
